This Week In Chemistry

If you go to the following url you can find out which famous chemists were born during this past week and next week. You can also find out which major events in chemistry occurred during this time period.

For example, you will find that Dorothy Nightengale was born on February 21, 1902 and that she was responsible for some of the chemistry involving alkyl benzenes with aluminum chloride and that Alice Hamilton who was born on February 27, 1869 was the first woman professor at Harvard (she is also sister to the famous classist, Edith Hamilton - I remember reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology so well in high school) . Also of note is the birthday of Phillippe Barbier who was born on March 2, 1848. He synthesized the first organo magnesium compound and was an associate of Victor Grignard. Perhaps we should start calling the Grignard Reagent, the Barbier reagent.

The broader site (url given below) gives some very cool stuff including original papers by famous scientist - eg. there is one by Louis Pasteur on fermentation.
